History

History
1986
The restaurant was founded by the first president (the father of the current head chef, Genichi Kawachi). The first president, who is originally from Fukuoka, was approached by the previous owner and started the restaurant. He first came to this place while on a motorcycle tour.
2000
The current head chef, Genichi Kawachi, established the auberge style.
2016
On April 14th, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake occurred in the Kumamoto region of Kumamoto Prefecture, and a seismic intensity of 7 was observed in Mashiki Town, Kumamoto Prefecture. Our facility was also forced to undergo repairs and restoration for six months. However, thanks to one remaining strong pillar, the repairs and restoration were completed quickly.
2020
The two sons of current head chef Genichi Kawachi have returned from their training and are exploring new directions. Due to the spread of COVID-19, the number of foreign tourists has dropped dramatically. However, thanks to the support of our regular local customers, we have been able to overcome these difficult times. We are truly grateful for the warm support and encouragement of the local people, and we are determined to continue to work together with the community.

Looking back over the past 40 years

The strengths of this facility are its spectacular location, free-flowing hot spring water, and Western cuisine, including French cuisine. The three elements of hot spring water, scenery, and food are its greatest attractions. The hot spring water is free-flowing and plentiful, and is drinkable. Meals, accommodation, and hot spring water are all contained within this facility. The guest rooms are characterized by the fact that they are all-inclusive, along with meals and hot spring water, and are particularly strong for women in terms of traffic flow and a sense of security, making them a space that is also safe in terms of security. You can enjoy the view from the guest rooms, and we hope you will also enjoy the open-air baths. Please enjoy both the hard aspects of the building and the soft aspects that are made by human hands.

“Challenge for the next 100 years”

Since our founding, we have operated both as a restaurant and accommodation facility. Over 30 years have passed since we established our French auberge style. We will continue to protect this tradition, which is loved by many of our guests. However, we also believe that we need to evolve with the times. Due to environmental protection measures, such as Lake Kinrin, it is difficult to make major changes to the building itself. However, we are looking for ways to make Pension Kinrinko Toyonokuni and Restaurant Yotosha beloved for the next 100 years, taking advantage of our experience as the next generation. We hope you will look forward to our future evolution.
